Scanning & Archiving

A photograph begins with the image, but its longevity depends on how that image is captured, preserved, and organized. Weldon offers a full range of scanning and archiving services – from high-resolution drum scans for fine art output to comprehensive digitization and storage solutions for photographic collections of any scale.

Scanning

One of the most critical steps in fine art printing is a high-quality digital capture. At Weldon Color Lab, we produce scans using three different processes, each selected for the specific requirements of the material, the intended output, and the budget.

Drum Scanning

We produce drum scans on a Heidelberg Primescan D8200, an 11,000 dpi scanner manufactured in Germany in 2000. Widely considered the gold standard for film scanning, the photomultiplier tube scanner produces files of extraordinary tonal depth and resolving power. We maintain and calibrate our D8200 fastidiously; it is one of the most exciting instruments in our facility and we treat it with great respect.

Digital Camera Capture

Often the highest-quality choice for reflective artwork, we use a 50-megapixel Canon 5DS R with polarized strobe lighting to digitize two-dimensional works up to 60×120". This process eliminates glare and surface texture interference, producing a sharp and color-accurate capture of your original.

Flatbed Scanning

For film and reflective media where drum scanning or camera capture is not required, we use a 2400 dpi Epson 12000XL Photo flatbed scanner. This scanner produces high-resolution files suitable for large-format output, and is always processed through SilverFast SE for optimal color and tonal accuracy.

Archiving

Weldon offers comprehensive digitization and archiving services for photographic and fine art collections of any scale. From a single family photo album to an institutional archive spanning decades, each project is handled individually, with a workflow designed around the specific materials, organizational needs, and intended use of the collection.

We accept prints, slides, negatives, and albums in any format. Deliverables include high-resolution digital files, organized according to a naming and folder convention developed in consultation with each client. We work intimately with photographers, estates, galleries, and private collectors to ensure that the resulting archive is built to institutional standards.

Storage

We know space gets tight. Weldon is happy to offer storage solutions for your digital or physical media (including files, film, and hard drives) for a monthly fee.

Off-site Archiving

We understand that not every piece can make the trip to the lab. That’s why we offer off-site archiving services, traveling to where the work is to carry out digitization. These projects often include dimensions, provenance, and condition — frequently used for insurance or appraisals. If you are managing a significant collection and looking for an archivist who will treat it with the seriousness it deserves, we would like to hear from you.
